PhotoPlay: zooM, zoOM, zOOM, ZOOM
His eyes, yes, those eyes. My attention was captive from the start and his body was also hard not to look at. I could simply stare and stare and go for a deep long walk right into the depths of those eyes. It was something about the black hair that framed them and their glassy appearance. All I wanted to do was touch him.
An intense desire to know more about the bee in front of me was one of the reasons I picked up a camera for the first time.
Elliot Erwitt agrees that it is not about just seeing, but seeing in a certain way. He writes:
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them."
Elizabeth Weller, a photographer in the HCB community, understands this:
Elizabeth:
• focuses on a particular detail,
• zooms in and fills her frame, and
• clears the background of any distractions.
For this month’s PhotoPlay, turn your dial to the flower button, which is the Macro function. If you do not have a digital SLR, but rather a fixed lens camera (a point and shoot), this button is usually located as a separate button on the camera. Find an object, zoom in and fill the frame. Try and stretch yourself. If you normally shoot flowers, don’t take flowers. If you usually photograph objects in your house, go outside instead. Share your links by Wednesday, September 15, for a feature in the gallery next Friday.
