Culture: In Him All Things Hold Together

Eleven years ago I attended a conference in Pittsburgh called Jubilee. I didn’t know what to expect and didn’t have the option of skipping it for the small fact that I was employed by the host organization.

Yet I’ve happily returned every year since…except for that time our daughter was due on the conference weekend and Julie wouldn’t let me go. (I’m kidding, of course!)

Here’s why I go back: Jubilee, put on by the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO), has been a key player in the work and faith conversation for the past thirty-five years. Since the 70s, Jubilee has hosted poets, artists, NASA researchers and high school German teachers, Mother Teresa-inspired hipsters, presidential advisors and emergency room social workers, famous athletes, biographers and urban loan officers.

Tens of thousands of students and employees have been introduced to thoughtful representatives from every profession, all of whom care deeply, vocationally and personally about honoring God through their daily work.

What connects us

I joined High Calling Blogs in 2008 because folks here care about the very same thing. In fact, the organization behind High Calling Blogs – Laity Renewal Foundation – has been at the work/faith table even longer than the CCO!

Last year I invited HCB’s Senior Editor Marcus Goodyear and Managing Editor L.L. Barkat to join me at Jubilee. Not only did we have a blast, we immediately recognized the value of helping our organizations work more closely together. We’re heading in the same direction, so why not collaborate in the work to equip and encourage people to live out their faith in every area of life?

Something to ponder (quickly)

Jubilee is happening again on February 19-21 in Pittsburgh with over 2,000 students, professionals and facilitators planning to attend. HCB and the CCO invite you to come.

This isn’t a profit-making plug. Just an invitation to participate in a weekend of concentrated conversations around what HCB cares about most deeply.

jubileetvCheck out j2010.com for the speaker list and registration information, or watch a few talks from last year at jubilee.tv. You’ll discover a focus on college students (The CCO is, after all, a campus ministry organization), but don’t let that stop you.

Marcus and L.L. will be back again. I’ll be there. HCB blogger Michele Corbett will be there. So will folks like Bob Goff, David Kinnaman and Mako Fujimura. Let us know if you can join us - we'd love to meet you in person.

Daily Reflection From Laity Lodge

Beauty as a Signpost to God, Part 2

The fact that we can perceive things as beautiful, I believe, points to the existence of a God who loves beauty and created us in his own image. I talked about this in yesterday's reflection. Yet... Read More +
