In 1948, when President Harry Truman ran for re-election, he faced opposition within his own party. Why? After World War II, many brave black veterans struggled to find acceptance in their own country. Truman initiated the first civil rights legislation since Reconstruction . . . and his party did not like it.
At a tense political fund-raising dinner, someone angrily asked Truman when he would come to his senses. From his pocket, the president simply pulled out a copy of the Bill of Rights and read it aloud to the woman. “As president of the United States, that is my job description.”
