People tend to believe that running a company is serious business. But not Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines.
The man who led Southwest through 60 consecutive quarters of earnings increases . . . the man who revolutionized the airline industry . . . has proved that laughter helps build teams, spur productivity, reduce stress, and spark creative ideas. From President Reagan saying "Honey, I forgot to duck" when he was shot, to our ability to laugh at our own shortcomings, humor is an essential leadership skill.
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge urging you to enjoy humor every day. Laugh! If it doesn't come easily, at least it encourages an atmosphere where employees can comfortably cut loose. We take ourselves too seriously at our own peril . . . in the high calling of our daily work.
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:
...a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance...

READER'S COMMENTS
I listen to KLTY 94.9 Christian radio. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your commentation on the high calling. I was particularly sparked by the one about Herb Kellerher recently. I work for Southwest Airlines and all of us here at SWA have a very high regard for our leader, Herb. Thank you for highlighting him in your inspirational and uplifting commentation.
In all the times I've heard your commentation I never knew what Laity Lodge was. I even ran into a little trouble trying to figure out how to spell it when looking it up online. After seeing your website, I am quite interested in visiting your beautiful grounds sometime.
Cindy, thanks for your kind words about Mr. Butt's radio messages. We'd love to have you visit us at Laity Lodge.
