Hike Your Own Hike
Lucas and Joe hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. From Georgia to Maine—on foot—they covered two-thousand one hundred and seventy-six miles. Along the way, at various times, they saw another hiker enter and leave the trail. She didn’t walk every mile. Yet at the trail’s end, she signed the book.
Indignant, Joe reported the deceptive hiker to the park ranger. And the ranger said, “Joe, hike your own hike.”
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Once when Jesus gave Peter some hard news, Peter looked at John and said, “What about him?” Jesus replied, in effect, “Never mind anyone else; your job is to follow me.” Joe’s lesson—“hike our own hike"—echoes Peter’s lesson in John 21 …in the high calling of our daily work.
Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
