Playing with Life
New England winters are cold and long. And in 1891, boys at Springfield College in Massachusetts were restless and rowdy. Enter James Naismith—athlete and P.E. teacher—with instructions to distract those boys.
Now, James was a Christian. Faced with unruly boys, did he suggest a Bible study? No, he invented an indoor ball game full of running and passing. The boys loved it and wanted to call it Naismith Ball. James insisted on "basket ball."
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Not every solution calls for a Bible study or another church service. To everything there is a season. In that season of low temperatures and high energy, James Naismith honored God with his gift for games . . . in the high calling of our daily work.
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.
