Janice took a risk and told her boss the truth: his “big idea” for increased sales was a dud. It actually distracted the field staff from what did work. And numbers were down.
So when Janice spoke up, her boss grew angry…at everyone else. “I’ve never come down on any of you for delivering hard news so long as it was true,” he said. “Why didn’t someone tell me sooner?”
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. No boss is perfect, and like anyone else, bosses can learn from mistakes…if they know about them. To speak truth to power is risky. But to remain silent as trouble nears is really bad business…in the high calling of our daily work.
TheHighCalling.org seeks to create opportunities for Christian leaders to encounter God through new media tools for the transformation of daily life, work, and our world. Christian leaders are in all aspects and activities of daily life—including home, community, leisure, as well as occupation.
