In February, The High Calling launched its first new channel in over two years. With a long-standing emphasis on work and faith—and how the one should inform the other in every vocational pursuit, from parenting to claims adjusting—we sensed the need to expand our message to those just entering the game: young professionals.
Our content over the years has often centered on the established employee. But what about the recent recruit? And the STAR?
Young professionals form a significant portion of today's workforce. Whether carrying a PhD, a Bachelors degree, or a high school diploma, many enter their careers with a confidence to get stuff done. They’ve studied hard, volunteered more hours than previous generations, and come to the job (or to the satellite office on their parents’ living room couch) with unrivaled digital savvy. They see the world globally and invest locally. Few wear ties.
With this new look and a tool belt of talent to match, confidence runs high, which begs the question: What is the role of experience?
How well can a new member on the job—regardless of talent or drive—succeed at the level her ambition desires? When Jesus finished his story about the Good Samaritan, he told the lawyer—a lawyer, not a paramedic—to “go and do likewise.” What a call! Would the young professional have known how to respond?
Central to our interest in serving young professionals was this very question. Their confidence is contagious; their potential, exciting. But who helps convert these tools into success? More specifically, who helps convert these tools into success in a way that will one day have their clients and co-workers say, “Well done, good and faithful servant”?
So we made a list of individuals we respect: people whose wisdom we would have sought when we first joined the workforce and who we think could lend a hand to the young professional today.
And the YP coach was created.
YP Coaches—a project still in beta—works something like this: Work-a-day employees such as physical therapists, map-makers, and social media planners were asked to make themselves available to those seeking advice. The response encouraged us: "Sounds like a great program! Count me in." "I'm really thrilled to be a part of this." Though few have sought official coaching certifications, all have succeeded in their careers and have wisdom to offer.
We believe our YP coaches stand out as people qualified by experience and personal commitment to respond to Jesus’ call. “Go and do likewise” requires discernment and then fortitude to proceed. When the theory about work meets the reality of work, what we find at the intersection can pose more challenges than we know how to handle. Even God advised on this point through the prophet Jeremiah:
“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16).
