PhotoPlay: When God Makes the Outtakes into the Real Thing

"A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps" (Proverbs 16:9).

Few things in life ever go exactly as planned. Everybody knows the inconvenience of reorganized schedules and the frustration of unfulfilled dreams. It is sometimes hard to believe that God is more than a master puppeteer, making us dance on His whim.

But I am beginning to see that God's step direction isn't capricious at all. It is necessary, and it is redemptive.

Saturday's editorial shoot had been planned down to the last detail. I had my models in place, my perfect props, and my shoot itinerary. But I woke to clouds and blamed God for holding out on me. I insisted on a second bunch of flowers because the first batch was wrong. We got lost on the way to our location. I vented at the swarm of gnats lobbying to eat us alive. And to my utter shame, I ended up frustrated at silliness that kept interfering with my shots.

It became apparent after the shoot that my plan for relationship in 2012 evidently didn't apply to God. Or to my business-partner husband. Or to my models. As far as I was concerned, the shoot was a failure. The sick feeling in my stomach left me without much hope that it could be redeemed.

But when plans go awry and you look to God to direct your steps, you find that He holds out life in places you don't expect to find it. This is what I found when I finally went through my images:

The plans of God’s heart reach so much further than my own, and He is not above redeeming my mistakes to make me more alive. He's not worried about forcing me to dance. He simply leads me into it.

Daily Reflection From Laity Lodge

Beauty as a Signpost to God, Part 2

The fact that we can perceive things as beautiful, I believe, points to the existence of a God who loves beauty and created us in his own image. I talked about this in yesterday's reflection. Yet... Read More +
