At one of the Missional Church’s most read websites, David Fitch’s Reclaiming the Mission, Cyd Holscaw has written a wonderful article entitled, “Mission Hidden in Plain Sight: The Gospel in Everyday Life.”
She likens our daily work to cooking hamburgers for her family, secretly adding onions, garlic, and zucchini to the ground beef: “My kids think they’re just eating ordinary hamburger… but they’re actually eating life-giving veggies.”
At Life on the Vine, the church that she helps lead with David Fitch, Ty Grigg, and her husband Geoff Holscaw, they encourage one another to participate in the mission of God by way of seven practices of Christ’s presence – specific disciplines that keep them attached to Christ and that helps them yield to his reign in their lives .
“...In the same way that I hide veggies in beef, as we engage in these practices, our ordinary human activity is actually loaded with divine presence – the life-giving nourishment of Christ Himself.
Our extended families think they are inviting ordinary hamburger over… but we know we’re bringing onions and garlic along with us. Our coworkers think they’re eating lunch with ground beef, but we know we’re packing zucchini.
And so there is this mysterious and mind-blowing partnership between the presence of Christ and our human activity. Without His presence, our activity is merely an obligatory checklist. Without our activity, His presence remains hidden and intangible to a world that is waiting to see Christ incarnate in His people.”
TheHighCalling.org seeks to create opportunities for Christian leaders to encounter God through new media tools for the transformation of daily life, work, and our world. Christian leaders are in all aspects and activities of daily life—including home, community, leisure, as well as occupation.
