“Is Ephraim My Dear Son?

Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he the child I delight in? As often as I speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore I am deeply moved for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord.

Ephraim, Rachel’s grandson (see v. 18), calls out in repentance and is mercifully restored—an old gospel story. Rachel, who thought her sorrow was endless, now has hope. God again does his merciful work of resurrection.

What hope is there in your future?

PRAYER: God, I am always jumping to premature conclusions. I stop in the middle of the story, thinking I can guess the dismal last chapter. But only you can write the conclusion; I believe it to be a conclusion in hope, toward which I will live by your mercy in Jesus Christ. Amen.
