Howard E. Butt, Jr., is a business leader, spiritual reformer, bridge-builder, communicator, innovator, and author. He is one of America's earliest and most consistent advocates of servant leadership at home, at work, and at large.
He is president of the H. E. Butt Foundation, founder of the Laity Lodge programs, which include Laity Lodge Retreat Center, Laity Lodge Youth Camp, and Laity Lodge Family Camp. Mr. Butt also serves as vice chairman of the H. E. Butt Grocery Company, one of the nation's largest independent supermarket chains.
Since the early fifties, Howard's voice has played a strong role in articulating the importance of work in the Christian life. While not minimizing the importance of Sunday worship, Howard has elevated the other six days in service to God's purpose.
Howard Butt is the author of Renewing America’s Soul; Renewing the Spirit, Healing the Soul, At The Edge of Hope: Christian Laity in Paradox (with Elliott Wright); and The Velvet Covered Brick: Christian Leadership in an Age of Rebellion, which spurred national interest in servant leadership. His newest book about finding trust in an untrusting world is Who Can You Trust?
He and his wife, Barbara Dan Butt, reside in San Antonio, Texas. They have three children and eight grandchildren.
TheHighCalling.org seeks to create opportunities for Christian leaders to encounter God through new media tools for the transformation of daily life, work, and our world. Christian leaders are in all aspects and activities of daily life—including home, community, leisure, as well as occupation.
